Tra Terra e Mare...The Whites of the Amalfi Coast

Thursday, February 4th, I accepted an invitation to attend Wine Lab at Città del Gusto.  The theme of the evening was’ Tra Terra e Mare’, between the land and the sea. I was particularly interested in this event, not only because it would be the first time I attended a function at Città del Gusto, but because Paolo De Cristofaro of Gambero Rosso put together a lineup of the top 5 wineries from the Amalfi Coast.; Marisa Cuomo, Ettore Sammarco, Giuseppe Apicella, Reale, and Tenuta San Francesco.  I always try to take advantage of opportunities to hear from the wine makers themselves.  This gives me a chance to connect the wine with a face, a good conversation, and memories.  I was not disappointed.

Sommelier Franco De Luca

I took my seat in the front row, eager for the event to begin.  In front of me were twelve wine glasses (plus one for champagne) patiently waiting for our sommelier.  Twelve wines-six whites and six reds were the protagonists of the evening.  As each glass was poured, Paolo De Cristofaro took us on a journey through la strada del vino of Amalfi, Fuore, Ravello, and Tramonti.  Slides with spectacular images of the vineyards, wineries, and the men and women who work so hard to give the world great wines proudly exhibited in the background.  Vineyards anywhere from 100 to 600 meters above sea level.  Rocky, chalky, volcanic soil on steep hills. Spectacular looking vines.  Affascinante.

Autumn in Tramonti.  (Tenuta San Francesco)

Seated next to Paolo were the men whose wineries would represent the best of the coast.  Andrea Ferraioli, of Marisa Cuomo, Bartolo Sammarco of Ettore Sammarco, Prisco Apicella of Giuseppe Apicella, Luigi Reale of Reale, and Gaetano Bove of Tenuta San Francesco. Each spoke proudly of their wines attentively listening to their colleagues, their friends.

The whites were presented first and that is what I’d like to focus on for this blog.  Here are the wines in the order that they were served:

o   Tramonti Bianco 2008-Apicella.  60% Falanghina (biancazita), 40% biancolella

o   Ravello Bianco Selva delle Monache 2008-Ettore Sammarco.  70% Biancolella, 30% falanghina

o   Furore Bianco 2008-Marisa Cuomo.  60% falanghina, 40% biancolella

o   Tramonti Bianco 2008-Tenuta San FrancescoMixture of Falanghina, pepella and ginestra

o   Ravello Bianco Vigna Grotta Piana 2008-Ettore SammarcoA blend of ginestra, biancolella and san nicola

o   Furore Bianco Fiorduva 2006-Marisa Cuomo.  A blend of ripoli, fenile, and ginestra.

As each glass was poured, each member of the audience silently tasted, and jotted down notes. In fact it wasn’t until the end of our evening that Antonio Del Franco, President of Ais Campania shared his tasting notes. I compared my notes to his. I found that the  wines were beautiful to look at. Light yellow straw colored.  I often lost myself in the fragrances of fruits (such as green apples, lemons) and fresh light floral scents.   Diverse ranges of acidity, creamy flavors, smooth, morbido as I tasted each one.  The last two wines of the ones listed above spend time in oak.  This was noted right away when observing their slightly different color and somewhat stronger aromas.  I can’t pick a favorite in fact my opinion changed a few times over the course of the evening as we were served top class finger foods to go with our wine tasting.   I did like Marisa Cuomo’s Fuore Bianco 2008 and Tenuta San Francesco’s Tramonti Bianco 2008.

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day… A visit to Grotta del Sole

Legend has it that Bacchus, the god of wine, made wine in a cave (grotta).  He needed to go away for awhile but did not want to leave this cave unguarded.  He called on the sun (sole) to ensure that no one could enter.  Hence we have Grotta del Sole.

Ragazzi, one of the best things about living in an area with great wines is that you don’t have to go far to visit a great winery. Wednesday, I had the pleasure of spending an hour or two with Francesco Martusciello, Jr, enologist and production manager of the family run cantina, Grotta del Sole.  Discussions ranged from the winery’s 5 areas of production-the Phlegraean Fields, Irpinia, Sorrento Peninsula, Vesuvius, and the Aversa area.  Francesco told me how important the territory is for Grotta del Sole.  Each production area has its own particular grapes, vineyards, soil, climate, etc.  I was particularly taken when we flipped through photographs of their vineyards in Aversa-the alberata aversana.  Here, the vines get up to 20m in height and attach themselves to trees. Interesting to see and I have already marked a date on my calendar in September to take part in the harvest.

The height of the vines contribute to the high acidity of this asprino grape, perfect for their spumante and Asprino d'Aversa I got his photo from their web site.

The winery has been around since 1992.  Francesco took me to see how they are expanding their production area with additional steel vats and other equipment necessary to assist them in their production of 840,000 bottles of year.  The cement was still wet, but Francesco expects it to be ready in a few months.
Later, in their offices, we discussed wine in Campania.  Francesco is obviously proud of his terra.  Yes, every enologist worth his salt has to know about the grapes they produce, the origin, the land, etc. I felt, however, that Francesco really felt part of Campania as we assiagiato a spumante di Aversa. (Grotta del Sole was the first) and Falanghina, another top wine for Grotta del Sole.  Fragrance is important for me and both glasses were powerful.

Grotta del Sole is run by the Martusciello family.  In fact, during my visit, I met Elena Martusciello and Francesco’s cousin, Salvatore.  I have discovered that when you visit a winery in this region, you not only get to see the equipment and taste the wines.  You get to meet the people who put their souls into their work.  You have the opportunity to discuss their wines, the area, and make friendships.  I felt this at Grotta del Sole.

Grotta del Sole is located in Quarto, next to the IperCoop.  They carry a wide range of wines that proudly represent the Campania region.  The web site is well written-in English-and is full of info on their wines, vineyards and history.  Andiamotrips will organize a trip to their vineyards in early spring. I’ve got to see the alberata aversana!

East Meets West...Bolgheri and Le Marche Get Together February 12 at Ciao Vino

Winerdì wants to continue to examine different regions and the wines they produce.  This time we dive into the center Italy. To the left-Bolgheri, located south of Livorno, hugging Tuscany’s Mediterranean coast.  Home of cinghiale  (boar)and Super Tuscans. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sangiovese are just some of the grapes that run free in the ‘Maremma’, hills of Bolgheri.  The right-Le Marche.  Nestled between the Apennines and the Adriatic. Here Trebbiano,  Verdicchio, Lacrima, and Montepulciano reign.  Fabrizio Erbaggio will choose the best of both regions as we informally analyze their colors, flavors,  and aromas.

The cost of the evening is 25 Euro which includes a guided wine tasting of 4 wines as well as Ciao Vino’s buffet.

Don’t miss it!! The fun starts at 8pm…ish.
